Rope treatments
Take a look at the Edelrid range and you will note some strange codes against the ropes. What do they mean?.
AS. Advanced Shield. Edelrid's advanced rope treatment is a hydro and oleophobic fluorcarbon based coating. This special treatment is applied to each individual fibre of the rope providing long lasting and best all round protection against wet and dirty conditions.
BS. Beta Shield. Depending on the usage not all ropes need a dry treatment whereas abrasion protection is important to all performance ropes. Beta Shield provides a high quality yarn protection coating helping to keep dirt and other harmful substances off the rope yarns at the same time giving the rope a resilient protection against the rough surfaces.
TS. Thermal Stabilisation. Edelrid has been using a thermal stabilisation process for more than 20 years. The thermal stabilisation is one of the main processes that give Edelrid ropes their pleasant soft touch and easy handling. As the name implies the yarns in the core and sheath undergo a heat treatment cure to stabilise and harmonise the individual yarns. This cannot be removed or washed out and ensures a longer lifespan for the ropes.
Sharp edge resistant. There is a lot of talk about the various factors that can affect the strength of a climbing rope, when it comes down to it however, almost the only factor that will effect it’s strength in normal use is abrasion against a sharp edge.
For some time now the UIAA, the original standards body for climbing equipment, have been trying to formulate a ‘sharp edge test’ but they have recently discontinued this test due to uncertainties in the test methods. Edelrid’s own test laboratory is one of the most up to date in Europe and so they are confident of testing to the UIAA’s rigorous standards. All ropes marked in the catalogue with the sharp edge logo have therefore exceeded the requirements of the UIAA sharp edge test.
